Reason:
The Judges of the Promosedia International Design Competition 2005 Caiazza Memorial Challenge, were unanimous in conferring the first, and only, prize to the NORMA chair, designed by Christophe Bourban, student in his last year of the Industrial Design course at ECAL in Lausanne. The Judges’ reasoning was as follows: NORMA confidently solves the two parallel problems of structure and aesthetics for a timber chair. The characterising feature, in a decorative sense, is the crosspiece strut, and it actually performs an excellent static function. A hyper-structural form is obtained, which is certainly not gratuitous. At the same time Christophe Bourban seems to face the problem of overcoming the most banal components of the minimalist movement without, on the other hand, betraying its basic principles. The chair demonstrates a remarkable knowledge of design, and the chair, as a product, lends itself to real life, and to a series of forms by possible adoption of finishes and different covering materials for seat and back. |
